SCOTT WALKER ACCEPTS Q AWARD (2003) jarvis cocker
Переглядів 106 тис.12 років тому
A rare public appearance of Scott Walker, receiving the special Q award in 2003 and introduced by Pulp's Jarvis Cocker. Apparently i read in a interview with Jarvis that when Scott returned to his table, he asked the pulp frontman what the music playing over speakers was...."its one of yours Scott.....from Tilt!" came the reply.

Scott Walker's message to David Bowie for his 50th birthday, 1997. As you can hear, he was deeply moved. "I see God in the window!". I love the way Scott says 'on the other side of midnight'.The uk's radio 1 special broadcast featured Bowie hearing questions from other music artists. Apologies for the poor audio quality!

MTV caters more to the pop crowd, but at least radio is still a good format for hard rock music.

So much worse now (2023). “Rock bands” literally cannot play a show if their computers fail or are stolen. That is not rock and roll, or maybe any kind of live musical performance.

If only Frank had quit smoking and gotten a second medical opinion on his prostate, he would have lived long enough to see the eventual total irrelevance of MTV. When he stated this, MTV was at or near its peak, but even the greatest empires have an expiration date, and MTV reached its own about 10 years after he died. I remember the first time I signed up to have cable tv installed in my house, primarily for MTV in the late 80s and now how I may watch maybe 15 minutes a year at most if I'm switching channels and I stumble across an old episode of Jackass or Ridiculousness, of which you can only laugh at some poor dude getting hit in the genitals so many times. Honestly, I think the only reason the channel exists is because of the brand name, but content wise, it the complete opposite. How they remain profitable is a mystery to me. I Wille even venture to state MTV contributes to the obesity problem in this country.

What he talks about, is the reason I've always demanded my bands to record 'live', no overdubbs, and yes with the mistakes (we are humans)! It was a concern about honesty, and about what you could actually perform live! So, all records I've participated in, are recorded live! Probably a commercial suicide, but, nontheless, honest! Thank you Frank, you are missed!

I love Frank, but as a 54 year old, I've scoured his interviews for decades and noticed that he always mentions "midgets and looks", which makes me wonder...what in the hell did he have against "Men without Hats" and the Safety Dance?

„Hi David, this is Scott Walker. I’m coming to you via a very crappy old hand-held tape machine so, I hope it’s all right. I’m gonna be a devil today and not ask you any questions. I’m certain that among the many messages, there will be those about how you always embrace the new and how you freed so many artists, and this is of course true. Like everyone else, I’d like to thank you for all the years, and especially for your generosity of spirit when it comes to other artists. I’ve been a beneficiary on more than one occasion, let me tell you. So have a wonderful birthday. And by the way, mine’s the day after yours, so I’ll have a drink to you on the other side of midnight. How’s that?“ Moved by this beautiful message, Bowie responded: „That’s amazing... Oh, I see God in the window. He really got me down I’m afraid. I think he’s probably been my idol since I was a kid. That’s very moving. I want a copy of that. I’m absolutely… That’s really thrown me. Thank you very much.“

But Frank Zappa is right what he says, M.T.V music videos took away the performance from the music artist. Also another way of saying it. M.T.V music videos got too baywatchy.

I've said this a hundred times and I'll continue to say it: Simon Cowell killed real music. Steve Jobs dug the grave with iTunes. NuMetal and hip-hop put its corpse in, and DJs pissed on it before reality TV, the new incarnation of MTV, and cult-of-personality celebrities took over and filled that grave with sand to seal its fate and, finally, the hoard of zombies that were their listeners put up the tombstone. Only one word is carved onto it: “Meh.”

He wasn’t kidding. Ad remembered from the late 80’s: “Do you look like a rockstar? Join our team! No talent needed!” This was for advertising purposes, of course, but then, looks are everything and they wouldn’t even think of hiring any actual artists.
